Yoga is an ancient Indian practice mentioned in the Vedas, sacred texts. It’s over 5,000 years old and was originally a comprehensive lifestyle that included moral values, meditation, and spiritual development, not just physical exercise.

Over time, yoga evolved significantly. During the classical period, sage Patanjali’s ‘Yoga Sutras’ provided a philosophical base for ‘Ashtanga Yoga’ or the eightfold path of yoga, moving it from ritualistic practices to a more systematic approach.

Today, yoga has spread worldwide, adapting to different cultures and ways of life. It’s now widely used for physical health and relaxation. The United Nations recognition International Yoga Day highlights its global appeal and the universal search for inner peace.

Some famous yoga poses to include are:-

1. Tadasana (Mountain Pose):

Tadasana is a basic standing yoga pose that sets the stage for other poses. It’s straightforward but effective, helping to establish stability and balance.

  • Tones the abdomen and glutes.

3.Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana):

  • Opens up the chest for better breathing.
     

Breathing:

  • Breathe in and lift your chest a bit off the floor.
  • Breathe out and go back down to the floor.
     

4. Child’s Pose (Balasana):

This resting pose is good for calming your mind and is helpful for stress.

Relaxation: Helps you feel relaxed both physically and mentally & can ease neck and back pain if you support your head and upper body.

Stretching:

  • Stretches your hips, thighs, and ankles gently.
  • Helps calm your mind and reduces tiredness.
     

5. Corpse Pose (Savasana): Complete Rest

This pose is all about relaxation and can be challenging because it requires stillness.

Relaxation and reflection:

  • Gives you time to think about your yoga practice.
     

Finishing with Savasana:

  • Brings together all the good effects of the poses you’ve done.

1. Why is June 21 a yoga day?

International Yoga Day originated on September 27, 2014, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the notion during an address at the United Nations General Assembly. In his UN address, he underlined the multiple advantages of yoga and selected June 21 as the best date for the celebration. He proposed an annual Day of Yoga on June 21, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and holds special significance in many regions of the world.
